Low Back Pain
Low back pain is the 3rd most common reason to consult a doctor worldwide. On average, 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their life and ±50% of those experience it for at least 1 day every year.
There are many causes for low back pain and thankfully the vast majority are caused by simple mechanical problems. The pain is usually focal with dull pain radiating to the sides or into the buttocks. This is called referred pain and is more to do with your perception than actual tissue damage.
So what exactly is causing all of these back problems?
Many muscles big and small support and move your spine as you go about your daily activities. These muscles have 2 main jobs:
-moving, to allow you to walk, sit, jump, etc…
-sensing, to know exactly what is moving and how much contraction is needed to support your spine.
The ability for your muscles to stabilize and control your spine is directly related to whether injury will occur or not.
In the case of simple back pain, the movement protection system has not responded quickly enough and the result is forceful stress to the highly sensitive structures in your spine, causing pain.
You might have noticed that the vast majority of back pain occurs after trivial movements such as getting out of bed in the morning or picking up a suitcase. This tells you that even the most basic movements are being performed without appropriate control.
Many people are walking, running, sitting, sleeping with this very problem and are only aware of it when they feel pain.
By examining functional movements that everybody should be able to perform, an overview of the problem is obtained. Piecing together the puzzle leads us to the most suitable treatment strategy to normalize the protective system.
